Honest comparison. Where GoDaddy DNS is fine, where you've outgrown it, and how to move without leaving your registrar.
- GoDaddy DNS is fine for parking a domain and pointing it at one server. Most domains start there and that is correct.
- You have outgrown it the moment you need failover, managed TLS, real API or Terraform access, or any idea of what is being queried.
- You do not have to move your domain to switch DNS. Keep it registered at GoDaddy, point its nameservers at dnswiz, done.
Where GoDaddy is the right call
- It is already there. If you bought the domain at GoDaddy, DNS is one tab away with nothing to set up. For a single site pointed at one host, that convenience is real and free.
- Registrar and DNS in one login. Renewals, WHOIS privacy, and records live in the same account. For a hobby domain or a brochure site, one less vendor is a feature.
- Brand familiarity. Everyone has heard of GoDaddy. For a non-technical owner who just needs the site to resolve, that trust is worth something.
Where dnswiz wins
- Real failover and multi-cloud routing. Health-checked POOL records (weighted or active-passive), GEO routing, and timed CANARY rollouts to any IP on any cloud. GoDaddy DNS is a static record table: it answers with what you typed, whether the server behind it is up or not.
- API and Terraform without an upsell. Every zone, record, pool, monitor, cert, and IP block is a REST call and a Terraform resource on every plan, including Free. GoDaddy gates its API behind account conditions and has a history of changing that access. If you want DNS in CI/CD, starting from a provider that treats the API as first-class matters.
- Managed TLS, issued through DNS. dnswiz solves the ACME DNS-01 challenge against the zone it already runs and hands you an auto-renewing certificate. GoDaddy sells TLS certificates as a separate product and does not issue them from your DNS.
- You can see what is being asked. Per-zone query analytics, top names, country mix, latency percentiles, and a forensic view of refused queries. GoDaddy DNS gives you a record table and no visibility into traffic at all.
- DNSSEC and a query firewall included. One-click DNSSEC with online signing, plus a DNS-layer firewall that refuses queries by source, country, type, or rate. On GoDaddy, DNSSEC rides on the paid Premium DNS add-on and there is no query firewall.
- IPAM in the same product. Manage your IP address space, blocks, networks, and addresses, as a live map and as Terraform. Give an address a hostname and its record publishes itself. GoDaddy has nothing here.
- Fast, predictable propagation. Record changes reach the dnswiz edge in well under a second; only downstream resolver TTLs gate them. GoDaddy's propagation reputation is the opposite of that.

You do not have to move your domain
This is the part people get wrong. dnswiz is authoritative DNS, not a registrar. Your domain stays registered at GoDaddy. You create the zone in dnswiz, then change the two nameservers on the domain (in the GoDaddy dashboard) to point at dnswiz. That is the whole switch. You keep your registration, your renewal, and your WHOIS privacy exactly where they are, and DNS moves to a service built for it.
Migrating
Lower your current TTLs a day ahead, recreate your records in dnswiz (or import them), then repoint the nameservers at GoDaddy. Both sets answer identically during the overlap, so there is no downtime; once the old TTLs expire you are fully on dnswiz. It takes about a day end to end, most of which is waiting on TTLs, not working.
Honest disclosures
- GoDaddy is a registrar first. If what you want is to buy and park domains with DNS as an afterthought, that is exactly what it is good at, and dnswiz does not register domains.
- For a single static site that never needs failover, TLS automation, or analytics, GoDaddy's free DNS is genuinely enough. We would rather tell you that than sell you something you will not use.
- dnswiz is a beta-stage product with a smaller anycast footprint than a company GoDaddy's size. We dogfood our own DNS on it, but we are honest about the maturity gap.
